In the shattering stillness of dawning realization
As the heartless wind strips all warmth from the journey
Between love that is found and yet in the same instant
Its loss looms like a spectre of grief, toothless and sharp,
Perhaps the purest call of yearning, begging forbearance,
At once selfish and selfless,
Arrays itself to the stars and all the living space between and through
All that we know and all that is yet unknown
Please, God, Lord and Progenitor of love
A dragon’s gone missing, and the denizens of the earth
Sorely miss the ease
Of his kindly and fire-tempered shadow
As he takes flight in our stormy skies
Sheltering us from our own small woes
Reminding us of the proper priority of beauty,
Passion, and reasoned emotion
Though he explodes in fantastic display
At every turn.
Let this not be forevermore, we beg You.
And, having received an answer
By His grace in keeping with earnest supplication–
For lo! The dragon returns, albeit with his ass in a sling!
Yet undaunted and game–
Now are we behooved of a clarion song of thanksgiving
Offered up willingly and heart-whole
And thus do we dance upon the grassy meadows
In humble and hilarious reprieve
Grateful beyond words (so to speak) that this lesson came
Not at the cost of its source.
Gloria in excelsis Deo!!
